Venezuelan Training Ship to Visit Cuba

HAVANA, Cuba, June 30 (acn) The Venezuelan Navy’s Simon Bolivar training ship will visit Cuba on July 5, as part of the activities to be held on the island to celebrate the 199th anniversary of the independence of this South American country. The 80 meter-long vessel will sail on Monday by the Havana coastline and will dock at the Sierra Maestra Terminal of the Cuban capital’s inlet, where it can be visited from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and on June 6, for 12 hours, beginning 9 a.m. Activities programmed by the Venezuelan embassy in Cuba to mark the signing of that nation’s Independence Act in 1811, include tributes to the national heroes of the two countries, sports activities and cultural presentations. Dafne Carreño, captain of the sailing ship considered to be the Venezuelan ambassador of the seas, said that her country wanted to share with the Cuban people the joy of these celebrations, due to the fraternal bonds existing between the two states. In addition, she highlighted the new role assumed by the military in Venezuela after Hugo Chavez became President in 1998, and the role currently played by women within the Bolivarian Armed Forces. During the first day of celebrations, representatives from the diplomatic corps accredited to Havana, and Cuban governmental institutions and organizations will place wreaths by the equestrian statue of Simon Bolivar located at the Avenida de los Presidentes. Likewise, they will pay tribute to Cuba’s National Hero Jose Marti, at Havana’s Central Park.

Christopher Hitchens, the author, Vanity Fair contributing editor and frequent television pundit, has suspended a tour to promote his new book while he receives chemotherapy. Mr. Hitchens, a former smoker who recently quit, made the announcement in a statement through his publishing house on Wednesday.

“I have been advised by my physician that I must undergo a course of chemotherapy on my esophagus,” he said. “This advice seems persuasive to me. I regret having had to cancel so many engagements at such short notice.”

The book, “Hitch-22,” has been on The New York Times bestseller list for three weeks and has received generally favorable reviews.

Reviewing the book in The Times, Dwight Garner wrote of Mr. Hitchens, “He has a mind like a Swiss Army knife, ready to carve up or unbolt an opponent’s arguments with a flick of the wrist.”

Cuban GM Leinier Domínguez Stays over the 2,700 ELO Point Mark

HAVANA, Cuba, Jun 30 (acn) For the eleventh consecutive time Cuban Grand Master Leinier Dominguez is among those chess players with 2,700 ELO or more points according to the FIDE world ranking update announced this Wednesday.

FIDE made official the Cuban’s 2,716 points, three more than the previous update in May, ratifying his position as Latin American leader, despite descending from the 28th to the 29th position.

These three more units were won during Dominguez participation at the recently disputed Memorial Capablanca tournament where he went undefeated for the third position of the Elite Group with 5.5 points out of 10.

The Cuban is the second highest player from the Americas in the world ranking, now led by Norwegian Magnus Carlsen, only surpassed by American Hikaru Nakamura (2,729) who is in the eleventh position.

Carlsen earned 13 ELO points and now accumulates 2,826, his best ever, what makes him closer to the highest ELO in history, 2,851 of former world champion Gary Kasparov.

On the countries ranking, which uses an average of any nation’s 10 best players, Cuba is in the 21st place with 2,581 units, while Russia leads with 2,734, followed by Ukraine and France with 2,692 and 2,647 respectively. Sports/aga/6.35 PM/aga

Cuba Begins to Use Straw as Alternative Fuel in Sugar Mills

June 30th, 2010 No comments

acnnews 5 Cuba Begins to Use Straw as Alternative Fuel in Sugar Mills

CAMAGUEY, Cuba, Jun 30 (acn) Cuba began to use sugarcane straw as fuel for sugar mill boilers seeking to reduce the consumption of fuel oil. The Ministry of Sugar recently imported straw balers, which collect, pile and pack the sugarcane straw left on the field after the harvest or in sugarcane reception areas. The machinery is already used in five of the 14 provinces of the country on trial. Orlando Gutierrez, with the mechanization department of the Argentina agro-industrial enterprise of Camaguey, told ACN that the use of the balers has yielded very good results and noted that the machines can pack 250-kg bundles. Angel Ramirez, who was trained in the use, repair and maintenance of the new machines, said that with enough straw available, the balers can make a pack every one and a half minutes. As complement to the investment, mills to grind the renewable fuel are being set up in the sugar mills. Adan Galban, Director of the Argentina sugar mill, which produces brown and white sugar, said during the harvest the straw is mixed with the bagasse to fuel the boilers. During the sugar-refining process, fuel oil is alternated. With a 30% of moisture, straw produces more heat than bagasse and a ton of the latter produces a caloric energy equal to that produced by 190 liters of fuel oil.

Notes from the last meeting????

June 30th, 2010 No comments

Dear activists,

I’m trying to catch up and send out upcoming events to the larger list, but I can see no notes posted from the last meeting. Were any decisions made? Is Janet Kobren going to speak at the next meeting? Before the meeting? Can anyone give me a call and help me catch up with what is going on, so I can pass on the critical info to the larger group? Are the 11th Day action’s kaput? Cosmos doesn’t seem to be keeping up the truthaction.org website and I see nothing scheduled for SF this July 11th???

Thanks Carol 650-857-0927

· Bring down the blockade of Gaza and Israel’s apartheid wall! · Free PalestineEnd colonial occupation! · Justice for the victims of Israel’s attack on the Gaza Freedom Flotilla! · End U.S. aid to IsraelBoycott Israeli ships and goods!

On July 6, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu will be in Washington meeting with President Obama. The meeting was originally scheduled for June 1, the day after Israel’s act of piracy and murder against the Gaza Freedom Flotilla that left at least nine people dead and dozens wounded. Every day, Palestinians continue to be killed, wounded and imprisoned by the occupation forces.

The 24-hour shutdown of the SSA terminal at the Port of Oakland where an Israeli Zim lines ship docked on June 20 was a historic victory. More than 1,000 people joined the morning and afternoon mass picket lines, which were honored by members of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union, Local 10. June 20 was the first time ever that an Israeli ship was boycotted in a U.S. port. Norwegian, Swedish and South African dock workers have called protests refusing to handle Israeli cargo.

The worldwide BDS (Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions) movement against Israeli apartheid is rapidly gaining momentum. Just last week, the largest British public workers union, UNISON, which has more than 1.4 million members, passed a motion at its national conference reading, in part: “Conference reaffirms the support for an economic, cultural and sporting boycott of Israel and call on Unison to join the scores of unions around the world who have endorsed the Palestinian call for boycott, divestment and sanctions against Israel. Further to that as an immediate sanction for the illegal attack on the flotilla, we call on the government to expel the Israeli ambassador.”

Demonstrations are planned in Washington, D.C., San Francisco, Los Angeles and other cities on July 6.

Join the protest at the Israeli consulate on July 6 and bring your friends, neighbors, fellow workers and students.

International Officials Extol Cuban Health System

acnnews 3 International Officials Extol Cuban Health System

HAVANA, Cuba, Jun 30 (acn) Cuba’s infant mortality rate is lower than that of many developed countries, said the president of the World Pediatrics Association, Chok-wan Chan, in a Havana meeting. Chok-wan Chan compared health figures from the United States with those of the island and noted that Cuba showed better rates than the neighboring country, Granma newspaper reported. The specialist said the Cuban achievements are good examples to follow and noted that they were the results of the Cuban government’s political will, its free and universal health care system and the educational level of the people. In spite of the American blockade that limits the Cuban access to medicines and other resources, the island shows an infant mortality rate of 4,8 per one thousand live births. The Cuban health system was also extolled by Elizabeth Mason, director of Child and Adolescent Department of the World Health Organization as she delivered the closing words of the workshop.
