OTN: Anna episode: the other side of the story
The fact of the matter is that the present Government is neck-deep in Corruption and mega-scams. The people ( as is evident from the mass support to Anna Hazare ) have more faith and confidence in Anna Hazare than the Central Government. The Government should have tabled team Anna’s Draft Lokpal Bill in the Parliament alongside the Joke-Pal Bill for discussion and further action. But Govt chose to throw the Draft of the Jan Lokpal into the winds hurting popular sentiments. After that Govt continued to commit blunders after blunder. The arrogant Manish and Sibal literally belched venom against Anna hazare thru their Press conference on the 15th August’ 11. On the 16th morning Anna was arrested at his Flat in Mayur Vihar before he violated any Law whatsoever. Then he was detained in Tihar Jail, now home to Raja, Balwa, and Company. All such irresponsible acts on the part of the Government served as Catalyst to unprecedented support of the People to Anna and now he is recognized as the Second Gandhiji. Now certainly Anna’s team has the upper hand and Government should, in order to diffuse the high voltage situation. allow Anna to proceed with his FAST as long as he wishes and simultaneously agree to table the Draft of the Jan Lokpal Bill alongside the so called Jokpal Bill in the Parliament for Discussion and Vote. Apart from Jan Lokpal Bill Anna should also demand to introduce a Mechanism for the Recall of the Sitting MPs and MLAs by the Electorates of their respective Constituencies in the event of unsatisfactory performance of the People’s Rep , so that these persons do not behave as demi-Gods. If the answer is NO, then how different is it from the existing prosecuting institutions like CBI and CVC? ============================================== President Kalam and Pratibha Patil – don’t we see the difference ?
In Jok Pal Bill – we can have Kapil SIbbal, Digvijay Singh etc as Lok Pal.
In Jan Lok Pal bill – they will be better than the sycophants. They may not be 100% corruption free– but as we see some good Supreme Court and High Court justices, we can evaluate their record before appointment in Anna’s Jan Lokpal bill.
In Manmohan’s Jokpal bill, Sonia Gandhi’s decision will be imposed – just like P.J.Thomas was being imposed on us.
At least this is my understanding..

Dear Friends,
On April 30, there was a seminar on “Rule of Law and role of civil society” at V K Menon Hall in front of Supreme Court here. Literally
all speakers were singing Anna song forgetting about the subject and justifying Anna story as contextual.
I, as one among the panelists, raised some question there “can there be a presumption of integrity in favour a person or a group of persons
who are going to be in the team of Lokpal”?
Most of them said “No”
“If the answer is NO, then how different is it from the existing prosecuting institutions like CBI and CVC? “, I did say
Do we appreciate a person to be judge of his own cause in the context that Lok Pal has the power of investigation and power of punishment too?
Is our existing system, which includes CBI and CVC not sufficient to
deal the crime of corruption? We have seen Narasimha Rao being convicted in JMM MPs bribery case, Rajeev Gandhi named accused in Bofors case and died before the trial commenced, H K L Bhagat faced trial in Anti-Sikh Roits case and died during course of trial.
If corruption is an illegal behaviour, can an institution like Lokpal stop corruption?
All present there knew the answer. There were two journalists from different national dailies there. They came to me that day and said
“we know what you say is right. But our policy is to support Anna. We rarely take stories against Anna.” Another TV journalist supported and said “Sir Anna names sells now”.
In the summer vacation, I was in Odisha. I sent an article to the most
prominent newspaper of the state saying “Proposed Institution of Lokpal is against the spirit of the Basic Structure of the Constitution in the context of Keshavanand Bharati case”. It will be a sad day in a democracy when a group of people claiming to be members
of civil society dictate terms on the parliament to frame a law in the manner they desire.
I received a call from the in-charge of feature section of that newspaper “Sir, our management supports Anna Hazare. We cannot afford
to publish your article even though it has the merit”.
I am very happy that today there is a public voice of angst against corruption across the country. It has been built up over a period of time. I am sure this is happening for the first time after
independence. Now team Anna exploits the public voice of angst against corruption in favour of the Lokpal Bill, which is in the exclusive domain of parliament, and dictates the government how to frame the law. This worries me a lot.
And Lokpal movement is being described as second freedom movement. Anna is being compared to Gandhi. Gandhi’s fast was to save lives during Hindu-Muslim riots in 1943 and again in 1947. Anna is sitting on hunger strike for a particular law, which is highly debatable, and
he is being compared to Gandhi and the country is being befooled.
I would not be surprised to see tomorrow that some media barons and corporate houses joined hands to create such a scene with some vested interest which is probably yet to come to the lime light.
