Rene Preval Presents Cuban Sugar Workers with Haiti’s Highest Distinction

Port-au-Prince, June 23 (acn) The Medal of Honor and Merit of the Republic of Haiti –Knight Degree- awarded by President Rene Preval, was received by the brigade of the Cuban Sugar Industry working in this country. Former Foreign Minister Renald Clerisme, current advisor to the Haitian head of state, presented the leader of the group made up by 27 workers with the highest distinction given by his government. Also given during the meeting, on the occasion of the closing of the 2009-2010 sugar harvest, was an acknowledgement for the role played by this group in support of the Medical Brigade during the health emergency following the January 12 earthquake. Ricardo García, Cuba’s ambassador to that fraternal nation, gave the voluntary workers the certificate, on behalf of the Cuban legation in Haiti. A note issued by the Cuban embassy points out that the words of thanks by Felix Mendez, head of the Brigade, expressed the satisfaction of the group for having fulfilled the mission entrusted to them by the Revolution of boosting sugar harvest here. He said he received the distinction given by the Haitian government as an acknowledgement to the efforts of the 250 Cuban voluntary workers that in the course of 12 years have offered their services at the “Jean Leopold Dominique” sugar mill located in Leogane. Raul Sanchez, head of the Party Group in the country, was in charge of the speech closing the meeting, in which the ambassador of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela to Haiti, Pedro Antonio Canino, was also present.
