Gas Drilling Awareness for Cortland County Events

April 10th, 2010 Leave a comment Go to comments

Gas Drilling Awareness for Cortland Co. has several events planned for the next few weeks and needs your help to get the word out to as many people as possible. Details for all of these events are on our website at:  http://www.GDACC.wordpress.com.     Saturday, April 10, 10 AM – 4 PM  we have a booth at the Business Showcase at the McDonald Sports Complex (look for signs on either rte 281 or Homer Av. between Cortland and Homer).  We can use people to stop by and staff the booth or roam the aisles and get people they know to visit our booth and see the Applegates’ slide show and pick up  materials.  Come anytime between 10 and 4.  We have booth #9 just to the right of the main entrance.    Sunday, April 11, 3 PM, a reception for The Earth Stewards Art Show on Marcellus Shale drilling will be held in the SUNY Cortland College Library. The  reception will feature talks by the artists and refreshments will be available.  A good turnout that day is expected..  The show will be on display until April 28.

Sunday, April 18th, 3PM,  Dusty Horwitt, JD, Senior Counsel for the Environmental Working Group , Washington, DC, will speak on the effects of gas drilling on water supplies. He will be at the Beard Building, SUNY Cortland.   He is the author of Environmental Working Group’s recently published “Drilling Around the Law, http://www.ewg.org/drillingaroundthelaw, a report on drinking water supplies from PA  to WY and how gas drilling has affected them.  We need help in getting local officials to attend and learn about experiences with  drilling elsewhere.  Please urge your town, city, village officials to attend this meeting.   Check the GDACC website to see other events and actions.  I am adding information almost every day to make the website a central source of information with links to other good sites.  There is a video section with links to important presentations, including Dr. Ingraffea’s talk recorded in Vestal on Mar. 31, 2010.  Please refer people to our site.    On April 22, the County Legislature will entertain a petition to the Governor and the NYS Legislature to Ban Hydrofracking pending further Independent Scientific Assessment to Determine the Risks  Associated with Hydrofracking.  The Town of Cortlandville is also   discussing asking for a moratorium so that the town has time to  pass ordinances to protect is roads and its aquifer.   The recognition that gas production using hydrofracking, in then volume and density projected by the industry, will create unacceptable damage to our enviroment and quality of life seems to be building in the public and our officials.  People interested in the passage of these two items and similar ones in other towns, villages, cities should contact their representatives to let them  know and ask for public hearings to educate the towns.  GDACC has some excellent speakers and programs to offer, if requested.  A volunteer form to give people an idea how they can contribute to this effor is on the website.  You can pick a project and run with it or you can send the volunteer form to me at 7 Broadway, Cortland, NY 13045 and we will try and match up people with similar interests.       See http://www.GDACC.wordpress.com for more local information.
